Engulfing Bars That Deserve a Pass
Not every engulf is actionable. A practical filter for when body size and session context say skip.
Engulfing patterns fail often enough that many traders abandon them. The issue is rarely the idea; it is treating every body wrap as equal.
Our pass filter requires the engulf to clear the prior bar’s full range (not just the body), print on expanding participation, and land against a level that already mattered on the chart. Without those three, we treat the bar as emphasis, not a setup.
If the projection from the engulf lands into opposing structure within one average true range, size is reduced or the idea is skipped. Risk is part of the reading, not an afterthought.
The Multi-Bar Context Lab drills these filters on live charts so the skip becomes automatic under time pressure.
